Former Trump lawyer Kenneth Chesebro accepted a plea deal on Friday from Fulton County prosecutors in their sprawling racketeering case into alleged efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election.
Chesebro pled guilty to a single felony count of conspiracy to commit filing of false documents and will only have to pay a $5,000 fine and spend five years on probation.
In exchange, he agreed to testify against the other defendants in the case, two of whom have already accepted plea deals.
Chesebro was indicted on seven felony counts back in August, including two counts of Conspiracy to Commit Forgery in the First Degree, Conspiracy to Commit False Statements and Writings, Violation of the Georgia RICO Act, Conspiracy to Commit Impersonating a Public Officer, and Conspiracy to Commit Filing False Documents.
Sidney Powell, another attorney on Trump’s legal team after the 2020 election, pled guilty on Thursday to reduced criminal charges the day before her trial was set to begin in Fulton County.
Powell pled guilty to reduced charges, a total of six misdemeanor counts of Conspiracy to Commit Intentional Interference with Performance of Election Duties. She will now have to serve six years of probation, pay a $6,000 fine, pay $2,700 in restitution to the state, and write an apology to the citizens of the state. She also agreed to testify against any of the other 17 remaining defendants in the case moving forward, which includes Trump.
Powell’s punishment is dramatically less than if she had been convicted of the multiple felony charges that she faced in the initial indictment, which included two counts of Conspiracy to Commit Election Fraud, Violation of the Georgia RICO Act, Conspiracy to Commit Computer Theft, Conspiracy to Commit Computer Trespass, Conspiracy to Commit Computer Invasion of Privacy, and Conspiracy to Defraud the State.
The plea deals mean that multiple former members of Trump’s legal team are now cooperating with prosecutors as they go after Trump and former Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani — both of whom were hit with 13 felony counts stemming from their alleged efforts to overturn the election results in the state.
